About Stephanie

Thank you for visiting my website. I’m never quite sure what to say about myself as the characters and people who I write about are far more fascinating than I am, and I feel more at home talking about them than me, but I will do my best.

I started writing stories early and joined an afterschool creative writing club in elementary school. I was a fairly solitary kid with lots of imagination. I liked writing because I could create worlds of my own where things worked out how I wanted them to, and I could become someone other than myself on the page. I think I still enjoy that about writing. But somewhere between ten and fifteen I found friends and boys and drama and I stopped writing except when it was required for school. I never considered becoming or even really wanted to be a writer until midway through college. And as with many things it was a great teacher (professor) who led me toward my passion and away from law school.

I worked many other jobs on the road to a full-time career as an author, but no matter what I was doing for my day job(s), I practiced my craft, took classes, read, wrote lots of bad stories and poems, joined writing groups, and embraced rejection. All in the hopes that when the right opportunity came my way I would be prepared and able to accept it.

I lived in Los Angeles for fourteen years but about a decade ago returned to the Midwest. I now live in the same town where I went to school from 4th grade until I graduated high school. If you told my sixteen-year-old self I would live here as an adult she would have rolled her eyes and said she would rather spontaneously combust. But I love being close to my family, especially my nieces and nephew.

When I’m not writing you can find me exploring a museum, at a concert, binging on Netflix, shopping, daydreaming, baking, gaming, or learning something new.

I adopted a rescue dog in 2019, who is not only a great companion while I'm writing but who has kept me sane during this pandemic. Charlotte doesn't mind if I work in my pajamas, yesterday's leggings or that I failed to wash my hair today. So we get along fabulously. And yes, she's named after the children's classic.
